When is the Best Time to Buy Electricity?
In Texas's deregulated electricity market, finding the best time to purchase electricity depends on several factors, including market trends, your energy usage patterns, and your preference for rate stability. Here's a simplified guide to help you make the best choice:
Key Factors to Consider
Time-of-Day Pricing: Some plans offer lower rates during off-peak hours (usually at night). If you can shift your energy use to these times, you may save significantly.
Fixed vs. Variable Rates:
Fixed-rate plans offer price stability throughout the contract term, protecting you from market fluctuations.
Variable-rate plans fluctuate with market conditions, which could lead to savings or unexpected price spikes.
Seasonal Trends:
Summer: High demand from air conditioning can increase prices.
Mild Seasons: Fall and spring often see lower demand and potentially better rates.
Market Conditions: Factors like weather, fuel prices, and renewable energy generation influence electricity prices. For example, prices may drop during periods of high wind or solar generation.
Contract Expiration: If you're on a fixed-rate plan, start shopping for a new plan before your contract ends to avoid being placed on a higher-priced default rate. (Spring & Fall)
Promotional Deals: Retail providers may offer incentives, such as sign-up bonuses or limited-time discounts, which can make timing your purchase even more rewarding.
How to Make the Best Decision
Review Your Consumption Patterns: Tailor your plan choice to when and how you use electricity.
Monitor the Market: Use tools like the Texas Electric Choice website to compare rates and find the best deals.
Act Early: Donβt wait until your contract expires; start exploring options in advance.

Seven Things you Need to Know About Buying Electricity for your home in Texas
1) Anyone can switch electric companies as long as you are not in a co-op. Now, if you are unsure whether you are in a co-op. Then enter your ZIP code for each company; if you are in a co-op, pricing will not be displayed. However, if you get pricing, you can buy electricity from that company.
2) There are always two companies involved in electricity. One is the company you choose to buy electricity from, and the other is the one that delivers the electricity. AEP Central is the company that owns all the wires and transformers down here in the Valley, and their charge for supplying electricity to you is the same no matter which company you choose to buy your electricity from.
3) There are two costs to consider when buying electricity. One is the rate they charge per kWh, and the other is if they have a monthly meter or service charge. If it's worth paying this charge depends on your usage and how much you save per kWh with this supplier.
A) So, if one company charges 10 cents per kWh and has no meter charge, versus one that charges 10 cents per kWh with a $7.00 charge. The second one will cost you $84 more per year.
B) Another thing to look at is that some companies will charge a monthly fee for usage below a certain level. For example, a company states there is a monthly fee of $7.00 for usage of 1000 kWh or less per month, but no monthly fee for usage over 1000 kWh. So, in this case, if you average 800 kWh a month, you will experience a monthly fee of $7.00. If your monthly average is over 1000 kWh, you will not incur a fee.
4) Rates vary by the length of the term. If you see a 6-month period with a good rate, but you will be moving in 4 months, that's a good option. You can still sign up for the six-month contract and cancel the contract when leaving without experiencing a cancellation fee, as long as you provide a forward address where you are moving. (Check the cancellation clause in your contract or look for the facts label with each company, and it will tell you) (Any Questions? Call us at 956 381-4446)
5) Most companies will NOT require a security deposit unless there is a credit issue now; if there is a credit issue, not all companies have the same requirements. If one company requires a security deposit, the next may not, as their credit requirements are lower. Now, if all companies are requesting a security deposit, you will find that not all will require the same one. So shop around for the best deal.
6) Prepay Options. We offer SMART Prepaid Electric - The Benefit prepaid plan, you can buy as much as you want, and no deposit is required. Now with the Prepay plan, you just buy the amount you need for 1,2,3 months (No limit, you can buy as much as you want)! You buy energy by putting money into your account.( Like a savings account ) Then you draw from it, buy more as needed, and put it back into your account. If you move, you can either receive a refund for the unused portion or leave it in your account to finish when you return.
7) Payment options. Some companies charge a fee if you pay online or use a credit card. If you typically pay by check, there will usually be no issue. However, if you use another payment method, you must check with the company for their payment fees.

Saving Tips for Homes
In AIR CONDITIONING
β’ Save on your energy bill by turning up your AC 1-2Β° β save even more when you use a programmable or Wi-Fi enabled smart thermostat.
o Every degree above 78 can save you up to 8% on your energy bill.
o Setting your AC to a very low temperature does not make your house cool down faster. It just wastes energy.
o Set or program your AC to 80Β° when you're gone for more than 4 hours.
o Set the AC to cool down after 7 p.m.
o A programmable or smart thermostat can automatically adjust cooling or heating temperatures for optimal performance and savings. A smart thermostat may be adjusted remotely.
β’ Use fans. They make a room feel 4-6Β° cooler.
β’ Keep out the sun and hot air.
o Make sure windows and doors are closed tightly.
o Close blinds or drapes on windows that get direct sunlight.
o Shade your outside AC units or condensers.
β’ Limit your use of the vent fans above your stove and in your bathroom. They pull in hot outside air, making your AC work harder.
HEAT
β’ Turn down your heat 1-2Β° or as low as is comfortable β save even more on your energy bill when you use a programmable or smart thermostat.
o Setting your heat to a very high temperature does not make your house heat up faster. It just wastes energy.
o Set or program your heat to 55Β° when you're gone for more than 4 hours.
o Turning your thermostat down 7Β° to 10Β° for 8 hours a day in the fall or winter, and up in the spring and summer can save you up to 10% per year on your heating and cooling bills.
β’ Keep out the cool air and let in the sun.
o Make sure windows and doors are closed tightly.
o Open blinds or drapes on windows that get direct sunlight during the day to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to reduce the chill.
o Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Keeping it open is like keeping a window open during the winter; warm air goes right up the chimney.
o If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue.
o If you do use the fireplace, install tempered glass doors and a heat-air exchange system that blows warmed air back into the room and lower your thermostat setting to between 50Β° and 55Β°F.
ELECTRIC WATER HEATER
β’ Set your water heater temperature to 120Β°F.
β’ Drain your hot water tank regularly to remove sediment.
β’ When buying a new water heater, consider a tankless unit. These systems are 35-45% more efficient. Plus, you'll never run out of hot water.
β’ Install low-flow showerheads in any onsite shower facilities.
β’ Install faucet aerators in bathrooms.
β’ Insulate water heaters and supply pipes.
WINDOWS, DOORS & INSULATION
β’ Save from 10-20% per year on heating and cooling costs by sealing uncontrolled air leaks.
β’ Make sure outside doors have enough weather stripping.
β’ Consider Caulking windows and weather-stripping external doors.
β’ Upgrade to energy-efficient windows. Add solar shades or window tint.
β’ Install Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings on windows. This coating lets light in but blocks the heat.
BUILDING EFFICIENCY
β’ Add trees and shrubs on the east, west, and south sides of your building.
β’ For more savings, consider upgrading equipment, lighting, insulation, and more. Look for ENERGY STAR qualified products. These options use 10-50% less energy than standard models.
ALL APPLIANCES
β’ Consult the Energy label prior to purchasing appliances to get information on energy consumption and how much energy the appliance uses in comparison to similar models.
REFRIGERATOR & FREEZERS
β’ Keep your refrigerator and freezer full, even if you just use bottles of water. A full fridge uses less energy.
β’ Minimize opening and closing your refrigerator and freezer. Each time you open them, warm air rushes in causing appliances to work harder and use more energy.
β’ When you purchase a new, more energy-efficient refrigerator, consider recycling your old refrigerator. Storing your old refrigerator in a garage or other non-air conditioned space can damage the refrigerator and make it work much harder, costing you more money.
β’ Make sure the seals on your refrigerator and freezer are airtight.
β’ Keep the condenser coils on your refrigerator and freezer clean.
WASHERS, DRYERS, & DISHWASHERS
β’ Save money by letting the Texas heat dry your clothes.
β’ Use a clothesline or drying rack instead of the dryer.
β’ If your clothes dry a little stiff, use your dryer's "fluff" cycle (before 3 or after 7 p.m.).
β’ Run washers, dryers, and dishwashers only when fully loaded.
β’ Use the air-dry setting on your dishwasher. The heat-dry setting uses more energy. It also heats up your home, which means more AC.
β’ Wash your laundry with cold water.
β’ Don't overfill your dryer.
β’ Dry your laundry loads back-to-back and clean the lint filter between loads. This way, your dryer is still hot from the previous load, and you save energy.
ELECTRONICS
β’ Unplug TVs and other equipment when you leave a room. Use power strips to make this easy. Many electronics continue to use power even when they are switched off which can add 10% to your monthly utility bill.
β’ Use the "home" or "standard" setting on your TV to reduce the TV's energy usage by 18% to 30%.
β’ Unplug your phone charger and similar devices when charging is complete.
β’ Use ENERGY STAR set-top boxes which are 40% more efficient than conventional models.
β’ Stream content on the smallest device that makes sense for the number of people watching.
β’ Watch out for video game consoles. They can be energy hogs! Streaming on your video game console can use 10 times more power than streaming through a tablet or laptop.
LIGHTING
β’ Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) or ENERGY STAR certified LED (light-emitting diode) lightbulbs. An ENERGY STAR certified LED lightbulb uses up to 90% less energy than old incandescent bulbs and can save you more than $80 in electriciy costs over its lifetime.
β’ ENERGY STAR certified light fixtures use 70%-90% less energy, produce about 70% less heat than traditional models using incandescent light bulbs, and last about 15-25 times longer.
β’ Using a small light when reading is more efficient than brightly lighting an entire room.
β’ Keep your light bulbs clean and free from dust.
β’ Use LED holiday light strings to reduce the cost of decorating your home for the winter holidays.
β’ Turn off lights when not in use.
